What Does the Bloomberg Fellows Program Offer?

The Bloomberg Fellows Program provides full-tuition scholarships for selected professionals to study at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

For MPH Fellows, the program covers tuition and fees for the degree and also provides a stipend to help offset costs such as travel, books and participation in required in-person courses in Baltimore.

DrPH Fellows receive a full scholarship covering tuition and fees for up to 70 credits.

Beyond financial support, Fellows become part of a growing network of public health professionals, researchers, educators and organizations working to improve health outcomes across the United States.

Five Focus Areas

The Bloomberg Fellows Program focuses on five major public health challenges identified by the Bloomberg American Health Initiative:

1. Addiction and Overdose

The program supports professionals working to prevent addiction and overdose and address related public health challenges.

2. Adolescent Health

This area focuses on improving health outcomes for adolescents and addressing issues affecting young people’s health and well-being.

3. Environmental Challenges

Applicants working on environmental issues that affect public health can apply through this focus area.

4. Food Systems for Health

This area includes work related to food systems, nutrition, obesity, food production and food policy.

5. Violence

The program supports professionals working to prevent violence and improve community safety and health.

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative describes these as five critical challenges affecting health and life expectancy in the United States.

Who Can Apply?

The Bloomberg Fellows Program has a specific eligibility structure.

Applicants must:

  • Be currently based in the United States.
  • Be employed full-time by an eligible collaborating organization.
  • Work on one of the program’s five focus areas.
  • Have their work and the organization’s relevant activities based in the United States.
  • Apply separately to the Johns Hopkins MPH or DrPH program.
  • Apply to the Bloomberg Fellows Program itself.
  • Be prepared to continue engaging with their collaborating organization during the fellowship.

Importantly, applicants do not have to be U.S. citizens. International professionals can be eligible if they meet the program’s requirements, including being based in the United States and working with an eligible organization.

Volunteers are not eligible because applicants must be full-time employees of their collaborating organization.

What Is a Collaborating Organization?

A collaborating organization is the applicant’s current employer.

Eligible organizations can be public or private and do not necessarily have to be traditional public health organizations. They must, however, work on one of the five Bloomberg American Health Initiative focus areas.

Examples may include:

  • Government agencies
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Community organizations
  • Health organizations
  • Educational institutions
  • Policy organizations
  • Advocacy organizations
  • Organizations working on food systems
  • Organizations addressing community violence
  • Organizations working on environmental challenges

The organization’s work in the selected focus area must be based in the United States, and the applicant’s work with that organization must also be U.S.-based.

Master of Public Health (MPH) Fellowship

Bloomberg Fellows can pursue the Master of Public Health (MPH) at Johns Hopkins.

Both full-time and part-time MPH options are available.

The full-time MPH program in Baltimore generally takes 11 months, from late June through late May. The part-time program combines online and in-person learning and generally takes two to three years, allowing Fellows to continue working full-time with their collaborating organization.

Fellows receive full tuition and fee support and a stipend to help cover fellowship-related expenses.

Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) Fellowship

The program also supports professionals pursuing the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree.

DrPH Fellows receive a full scholarship covering tuition and fees for up to 70 credits. Fellows begin the DrPH program in August.

The program is designed for experienced professionals who want to develop advanced analytical, leadership and public health skills and apply them to major health challenges.

Applicants do not need to have their exact dissertation topic finalized before applying, but they should demonstrate a clear interest in one of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative focus areas.

Service Commitment After Graduation

The Bloomberg Fellows Program is designed to connect academic training directly with public health practice.

After graduation, Fellows are required to work for at least one year with their collaborating organization in the selected focus area. This work must begin within 12 months following graduation.

This service requirement allows Fellows to apply their newly acquired public health knowledge and skills directly within their organizations and communities.

Recent Bloomberg Fellows Cohort

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative announced its 10th cohort of Bloomberg Fellows in July 2026, with 60 individuals receiving full scholarships.

The cohort includes 50 MPH Fellows and 10 DrPH Fellows, working across 57 organizations in 24 states and Washington, D.C.

This demonstrates the scale of the program and its focus on supporting professionals already working on important public health challenges.

Application Requirements

Applicants need to complete two separate applications.

Application 1: Johns Hopkins Degree Program

Applicants must apply to either the MPH or DrPH program through the Schools of Public Health Application Services (SOPHAS) system.

Application 2: Bloomberg Fellows Program

Applicants must separately complete the Bloomberg Fellows Program application through the fellowship’s designated online application platform.

Both applications are required for fellowship consideration.

Applicants should carefully review the specific admissions requirements for their chosen MPH or DrPH program before submitting their application.
